Why Does My Yorkie Snort Like A Pig?

Your dog might be experiencing reverse sneezing when it snorts like a pig. Reverse sneezing isnโ€™t really a sneeze. It is a condition where your pet extends its neck and begins producing gasping noises.

Below are some factors that may cause your dog to snort like a pig. It is important to know what can cause this, so that you can determine if your dog needs medical attention when it makes this kind of sound.

This Is Why Your Yorkie Snorts Like A Pig | Causes & Treatment

Why Do Yorkies Snort?

Your dog might be reverse-sneezing because there is something that is irritating its soft palate. The palate is the soft, fleshy tissue extension of the roof of its mouth and throat.

The irritation affects the trachea, which will then become narrow, making it harder to breathe. As a result, your dog will begin gasping for air.

While many people will see this as very alarming, there is nothing more to this condition than an irritation in the soft palate and throat.

It is not generally harmful and is certainly not a life-threatening condition. Your pup will recover on its own without medical intervention.

Treatment For Yorkie Making Pig Noises

In most cases, no medical treatment is necessary for reverse sneezing. Once your Yorkie figures out to exhale through the nose, the attack is usually over.

There are rare instances where a Yorkie can develop underlying illnesses from this, or suffer some other debilitating issue during this attack.

To help your Yorkie to get through this kind of episode, you can simply massage its throat, or cover its nose to make it swallow.

This will help to clear out whatever is irritating you petโ€™s throat.

Another thing to try is to hold out your Yorkieโ€™s tongue. This process can help it to force more air into its nasal passage. You will know when it is over when your pet stop sneezing.

There are some signs to look out for that could indicate a severe episode.

These signs are a discharge that is coming from the nose, or a bloody nose. In addition look for any deformity that makes you think there is something out of the ordinary.

Another indicator is a lack of appetite and energy, or and breathing problems. These indicators should not be taken lightly. If you see any of them you should strongly also consider making a trip to the vet.

Yorkie Snorting: Conclusion

The main thing to take away from this article is that snorting is not uncommon and not generally a serious problem. This pig impression is more like a physical phenomenon happening inside your Yorkiesโ€™ body.

And the truth is that all dogs snort, although it is much more common in small dogs. Thatโ€™s because small dogs have a much shorter breathing path.

As mentioned above, it is almost never a severe problem. It is usually just a spasm. That said, if your dog starts snorting like a pig, it is still better to keep an eye on it.

Most likely, your Yorkie will recover quickly. And when the episode is over, give your precious pup some love and kisses to comfort him or her.

A reverse sneeze might not pose a serious danger to your pet, but it can be uncomfortable for your furry baby. It will appreciate a cuddle or two to assure it that it is fine.
