Why Does My Yorkie Pee So Much?

There are a number of different reasons your Yorkie might be peeing more than normal, like diabetes, a urinary tract infection, kidney or liver disease, or even cancer.

Of course, it could also simply be a short-term issue, if your Yorkie has drunk a lot during the day. But it is always best to keep an eye on it to make sure it is not a longer term problem.

If the issue persists, you’ll probably want to see your vet. We will now take a closer look at the main reasons your Yorkshire terrier might be peeing a lot, to help you get an idea what you are dealing with before you talk to your vet.

Reasons Your Yorkie May Be Peeing More Than Usual

The following are the most common causes of frequent urination in Yorkshire terriers.

Diabetes

If your Yorkie is peeing more than usual, it could be due to diabetes, which is a serious condition in dogs. Along with increased urination, a diabetic Yorkie will also be extremely thirsty all the time.

There are two types of diabetes that your Yorkie can have. The first, and most common, is diabetes mellitus. The second is diabetes insipidus.

If you suspect your Yorkie has diabetes, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. If you leave diabetes untreated, it could turn fatal.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

UTIs are more common in older dogs. But this does not mean that your younger Yorkie canโ€™t contract one.

Urinary tract infections are usually caused by bacteria entering your dogโ€™s genitals or from a weakened immune system.

Not only will your Yorkie be peeing more frequently, but you may also start to notice that it whines when it pees. You pup may even pass blood in its urine.

Kidney Or Liver Disease

Kidney disease affects your Yorkieโ€™s ability to remove toxic waste from its body. This can cause your pet to pee more frequently and in much larger quantities.

Liver disease means your Yorkie will retain fluids in its abdomen, which can cause excessive thirst and urination. Kidney and liver disease are serious conditions. If you suspect your dog is suffering from either one, make sure you schedule a visit with your vet.

Cancer

One of the most serious reasons your Yorkie may be peeing more could be bladder cancer. One symptom of this disease is that your Yorkie will pee more frequently and in small amounts.

You may also notice that there is blood in your dogโ€™s urine, or it may be discolored. You should see your vet as soon as possible, if you suspect cancer. Just as with humans, the sooner it is caught, the better the chances your Yorkie has of surviving.

Other Reasons

Cystitis can also cause your Yorkie to pee more than usual. It is caused by an inflammation of the bladder, which usually results from a bacterial infection, but can also be brought on by bladder stones and even tumors.

Your Yorkie could also have a pH imbalance in its urine. Your Yorkieโ€™s pH level should be between 7 and 7.5. If it is anything else, this cause increased thirst and urination.

This issue usually results from a poor diet, so make sure you feed your pup a well-balanced diet. These are the best dog foods to feed a Yorkshire terrier.

How Do I Stop My Yorkie From Peeing In The House?

The best way to stop your Yorkie from peeing in the house is by making sure you regularly let it out of your home for a toilet break.

I know this is easier said than done, especially if you have a hectic schedule. But if you let your pup out regularly, it will soon learn the times it gets toilet breaks and its bladder should soon become used to this schedule.

Another easy way to stop your Yorkie from peeing in the house is to simply tire it out! If you take your Yorkie on a long walk, as soon as you arrive home, it will be too busy sleeping to even think about peeing.

I would suggest taking your Yorkie on a 30 to 45 minute walk to fully tire it out. You can also play games that give your pup plenty of exercise to tire it out even more. Fetch or tug of war are both hugely popular with dogs.

Why Is My Yorkie Peeing So Much: Final Thoughts

If your Yorkie is suddenly peeing much more than usual, it may be completely harmless. If your dog has simply drunk a lot more water, its frequency of urination will soon return to normal.

But if the issue persists, you Yorkshire terrier may be suffering from a serious disease. In that case, you will definitely want to get your dog to the vet as soon as possible to figure out exactly what is wrong and what needs to be done about it.
